  • Crow Bar: Nice, funky bar in North Portland

After a day of record shopping, drinking good beer and eating, I had some time to kill and so I stopped for a last beer (or two) at the Crow Bar due to it's proximity to the last record store on my jaunt. Turns out, it's a really nice place, with friendly staff, and a laid-back but still kind of sophisticated atmosphere. It's oriented like a "real" bar - a very long / deep and narrow place, with a classic sit-down Galaga game, mellow low lighting and interesting, good art on the walls. I don't make it to N. Portland as much as I should, given the vibrant revival of the Alberta and Mississippi neighborhoods, but when I do get up there next, I will definitely stop back by the Crow Bar.

  • Mississippi Records: Awesome vinyl record specialty store

Mississippi records is a small shop which only carries vinyl and cassettes, with a small number of CDs from local bands. This is a great place to shop for original and reissued classics in many genres, but particularly soul, funk, etc. They do also have a great selection of punk / alternative / etc. As someone who collects / admires / lusts after vintage audio gear, it's also worth mentioning that Mississippi Records refurbishes and sells REALLY cool audio components, from turntables to amps to 8-track decks. I mean really, really cool stuff. In the front window, there's a DJ setup which shoppers can use to try out records and DJ for the shoppers in the store.
