  1. Kinokuniya Bookstore: For kawaii and edification, shop here.

I wanted some San-X and Q-Lia stickers and cute stationery, so I go to Kinokuniya for some nifty stuff. There are Japanese books, mags, and even some primers and materials to learn Japanese. Very few English/Japanese books available. Plenty of J-Pop music and cute cute stuff. (Weeaboos will rejoice!) You will spend a lot of time and money there. I kicked myself when I realized I forgot to buy a certain item not available in my town. Will make return trip in about a month. :D

  2. Pine State Biscuits: You do need good biscuits and gravy.

Got word via Esquire that in Portland, the best sandwich in town is found at Pine State Biscuits. Since I was visiting, I figure to try the Reggie Deluxe. It was quite tricky to locate the place, as there was a small red sign. I found it, and the store was just as small. I ordered its specialty, and it does not disappoint. It is authentic and made by scratch. The bacon was thick, the chicken breast was moist, and the biscuit and gravy is wonderful. The downside was that after you eat, one cannot linger long and must head out so others can sit inside. A bonus: you can also find Pine State at the Portland Saturday Market. Be prepared for a long line.

  3. Redeemer Lutheran Church: Want Traditional Lutheran Worship?

I'm a "High Church" Lutheran in "Low Church" attire. That is: I may look like a hipster but I certainly prefer to worship in the traditional liturgical manner. The problem for those of us who are Confessional Lutherans-- especially those who visit from out-of-state-- is that sometimes it's hard to find a church that celebrates the Sacrament regularly, subscribes unconditionally to the Book of Concord, and most of all, does not pretend to be hip and cool via contemporary worship. In the land of the terminally cool, there is a place of timelessness. Redeemer Lutheran does offer traditional Lutheran services. I been there when I visited PDX for OSCON. I enjoyed the service, although I was unable to meet the pastor as he was away on a retreat that week. Hopefully, I get to hear him preach the next time I visit Portland.
