  It's a perfect blend of ambiance, staple comfort food and new foodie concoctions. Their happy hour menu was decently sized (though I've seen better deals), but what it lacked in financial savings, it made up for in quality. The Mac & Cheese is being added to my Portland Mac & Cheese guide, the cocktails were unique and delicious (try the peartini!), and the Oregon Blue burger was a savory delight. I came with five friends on a Friday, and it was a struggle to find space, so I'd recommend coming with a very small gathering of people or (preferably) on a date. The interior has that uniquely Portland outdoorsy-modern decore, so you can feel comfortable to come slightly dressed up or down.

• Cork: Great, affordable Thai fusion

  With a name like Cork, it has to be... Thai? I was surprised to find out that the French-named restaurant was actually a Thai diamond in the rough. Centered in the heart of downtown Bend, Cork offers incredible, locally grown food with a Thai fusion twist: bacon wrapped and chevre stuffed chicken with a light creme sauce, tuna rolls, petit filet with a demi-glaze... all around delicious. Finish off the evening with the amazing fried bananas dessert. Hands down one of the best deserts I've ever had (and I've had a lot). The outside is perfectly crispy while not disturbing the banana's texture, paired with fresh whipped cream and caramel, this dish is a big winner. A word to the wise: get ready to fight off the rest of your table; one bite of this dessert and they'll be coming back for more.
