IKEA: Contemporary Style & Organization - Plus Cafeteria!
IKEA is an amazing store. Upon entering, you take an escalator to the upper floor, where you can begin walking through an expansive showroom of various room configurations. You are encouraged to grab a measuring tape, notepad, and pencil to write down items you want to remember to pick up in the warehouse later! Ideas abound for living, dining, kitchen, bedroom, and closet areas -- with contemporary styling and well-thought-out organizational possibilities for every room of the house. It is honestly overwhelming, but fun. With directional arrows on the floor, you are led through the upstairs until you finally reach the children's area... which then leads to the cafeteria. By this time you are ready for a break, and some nourishment. (Which must be why they offer such a variety of food and beverages... all very reasonably priced) Our favorite is their signature Swedish meatball plate served with lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes for $4.99. We usually get a salad, and a piece of their scrumptious apple cake (more apples than cake!) for dessert. The portion sizes are adequate to share. After lunch, it is time to go downstairs... where you can grab a cart and begin loading it with items for the kitchen and bath, including linens, rugs, lots of lighting possibilities, decor, and storage. They even have plants! From there you begin your exit through the warehouse, where you can pick up any furniture you have chosen, nicely boxed and ready to load. The checkout process is pretty fast for all the people that go through there. Then, as you leave the checkout area, they tempt you once again with food... an expansive Scandinavian food pantry, and a snack bar that serves cinnamon rolls. All in all it's a fun experience, and the items we have purchased (for both home and office) have been quality items that we continue to use and enjoy. Check it out!

Best Western Inn at the Meadows: Moderately priced hotel
We have stayed at this hotel a couple of times, thanks to the "Travel Portland" website offers. Initially it seems a little 'out-of-the-way,' but we have discovered that we can be anywhere... from PDX to downtown, within about 15 minutes. The front desk staff is friendly (especially Allison), the rooms are clean, and the beds are comfortable with lots of pillows to choose from. The only negative thing I would have to say has to do with the bathroom... I prefer the little travel-sized shampoos and soaps rather than the commercial soap dispenser contraption that's in the shower, and the lighting above the mirror is very dim for applying makeup. They offer an average hot/cold breakfast buffet. We would stay here again for savings offered through TravelPortland.com (along with the coupon book) and the convenience of places we like to visit when staying in Portland.
