  • Powell's City of Books: Have you been to Powell's yet?

Oh, you're new to Portland? Just been here an hour or so? Have you been to Powell's yet? Powells functions as Portland's Golden Gate Bridge. All the locals are shocked that you haven't spent your first day gazing lovingly at it and wondering how such an impressive feat is possible. And there is a reason for such adoration. Its amazing. Never have you seen so many books together, nor so many lovingly sorted so you can actually find something you want. Oh, I know, you've seen some pretty big bookstores before, and I'm sure your colleges selection was pretty darn impressive, but you ain't seen nothing like this. And the greatest thing about Powell's? You don't need to buy anything. We sort of treat it like our favourite library. You can browse to your hearts content. You can even go into the connected World Cup coffee shop and have some joe while you browse their books. Its lovely. * Warning though: * You will likely leave with a bag of books weighing thirty pounds, which will offset the weightloss from your wallet. You can't help yourself, its just that good.

  • Byways Cafe: The only breakfast you need

So, you're tooling around in the Pearl District and need some morning grub. Coffee shop croissants not going to cut it. Where to go? Hop on the street car and roll to Glisan. Byways Cafe (one 'e') has some of the most deee-licious scrambles in town. They also serve Stumptown Coffee, which can be viewed as a generally positive sign in P-Town eateries. The wait can be upwards of 30 minutes during the weekend rushes, and the seating can be cramped, but after you indulge your fast breakage you'll thank your lucky stars. Sorry y'all, you can't take it with you.
