Always buzzing: both good and bad
The Ace is everything it's cracked up to be: hip, full of trendy travellers, indie art, funky rooms and located right at the centre of the action in the city.
But at its heart, it's basically still a busy hostel in a busy part of town. Which is another way of saying: it's loud. There are always people coming and going at all hours, and drunken revellers in the bars downstairs and across the road every night. Which would be fine, except the rooms aren't especially well sound-proofed.
A great if you're here for a party time, not so much if you want a good night's sleep.

Top-notch urban hotel experience
For my wife's birthday this year, I took her on a whirlwind date, including an overnight stay at the Ace Hotel, which I had been wanting to check out for some time. I had been in the lobby, and to several meetings & happy hours at the restaurant downstairs (Clyde Common), but I had only seen pictures of the actual rooms at the Ace.
We booked the Superior Deluxe Front, and everything about our stay was *fantastic*. First, the room itself: HUGE at ~500 sq. ft. Very well appointed, with not only a very large Sony Bravia TV with digital cable, a very large desk, a huge sectional couch, king-size futon, and massive, classy shower - but also a very-high quality turntable and eclectic selection of vinyl records to play on it.
The decor is interesting, and it is different in all of the Ace's rooms. See pictures below, but ours had a very classy, spare mural covering 2 walls in one corner, while the other, sleeping side of the suite was painted a dark slate gray, contrasting against white features and mirrors. The room was VERY comfortable even in its classic, spare design - I have only had one hotel experience that compares with how much we enjoyed this stay, and that's kind of an apples/oranges comparison as the other was a luxury spa hotel at a golf resort.
Since we had a room on the 4th floor of the front side of the building, we had very nice views over Powell's and the Pearl District - nice to see fall exploding outside this time of year.
The location was perfect for us - see my Go See Portland guide (will post later this afternoon) for details, but we visited three restaurants and saw a movie, all within easy walking distance, during the course of our date.
The staff was courteous and hip, as I'd expect for this type of hotel. It's worth noting that from the parking sign in front, to the welcome mat, to the *instructions for the alarm clock in the room* - everything reinforces the Ace "feeling" or "vibe" (or... "brand"), without being obnoxious at all. In fact it was charming.
The only possible negative is that the location is NOT a quiet one, particularly on weekends. Even being on the 4th floor, there was plenty of street noise to entertain us, though it did not keep us awake. This is likely not the hotel you recommend to your cranky Grandma when she comes to town, though... :)
Summary: LOVED IT. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
