Ok, maybe it wasn't that ground breaking, but it really felt like it when I took my first of many trips to Nong's Khao Man Gai. The premise is simple, steamed chicken on rice - that's it. But, once you try it then your senses go into overload.
Because Nong specialises in one thing and one thing only - khao man gai - she can ensure it's the best quality of flavours possible. Serving one dish only is common in SE Asian food cart culture. What you taste is this perfect blend of herbs and aromas. These flavours are well integrated into the most tender and well-cooked chicken. Then there's the rice, that is most likely cooked in the same herbal broth. As a bonus, you receive a cup of this broth to sip along with the food. For the more adventurous, add chicken livers or fried chicken skin to add different flavours and textures to the meal.
The dish is accompanied by cilantro, cucumber and this wicked garlic/ginger sauce. All of it is wrapped up in butcher paper and rubberbanded to the broth cup.
If you're looking for a delicious lunch downtown, then definitely stop by and visit Nong.

Nong sells only one thing at her street cart: Khao Man Gai--rice, chicken, spicy sauce and soup. Sit at table on the sidewalk, or take out back to hotel or to a park. For $6 you get a wholesome, fresh lunch, and you can order a larger portion or more sauce or more chicken. But don't dally, as she often sells out.
