Sweet Masterpiece lives up to its name

I recently visited this unassuming bistro/chocolate shop for the first time, and I'm blown away by the quality -- and creativity -- of their offerings. The truffles are huge and delicious, with fillings that are just the right consistency. And the flavors! Grand Marnier was my favorite. I also tried a couple of different salted caramels, which were great, especially the lavender-infused one. The piece de resistance was the ylang ylang cherry bark. This rich, heavenly chocolate is lushly flavored with ylang ylang flower extract -- unusual but delectable. The friendly owner told me that this offering started as a Valentine's Day special, but her regular customers wouldn't let her stop making it. It really is that good ... and it's supposed to be an aphrodisiac, too.

Sweet Masterpiece is in the heart of the Pearl District, a short stroll away from Portland Center Stage and Powell's Books. I haven't tried anything but the chocolates yet, but they have a bistro menu and amazing-looking cakes and desserts. Yum!

Best for specialty truffles

If you like raw chocolate, and/or if you have diabetes and are looking for a sugar-less version of your favorite truffle, this is your shop.
They also do a great job combining spices and chocolate (especially ginger, cinnamon, and hot pepper). Note that their hot cocoa and many mochas are a nice touch in winter!
