50 Plates

Portland, Oregon

There's plenty to say about the delicious food and speedy service at 50 Plates. But for the purpose of today's tip, I'd like to focus on their DRINKING CHOCOLATE. The dessert menu, in addition to many chocolate-based confections, offer three types of drinking hot chocolate. The milk is brought to the table pipping hot, next to a frozen stick of fudge. Patrons melt as little or as much as they want of the fudge in the milk.
Personally, I dumped the whole thing in the milk the first time, and found it a bit too sweet. Now I'm using 2/3 of it.

Enjoy!

Sahagun

10 NW 16th Ave
Portland, Oregon

Elizabeth Montes uses local ingredients, including her dad's jalapenos, to make small, fun, crazy good truffles. The shop is easy to miss, tucked in a small side street, but it's worth the trip.
Watch out for limited hours of operation.

Pix Patisserie

3402 SE Division St
Portland, Oregon

There are some aspects about this place that are worth the trip, but it is not all that great for an extra trip. The brioche was surprisingly dry, stale, and tasteless. I doubt it was made fresh, though it did not say anything about it being day old. This was a disappointment, as previously their croissants were a good purchase. The pixie is a tasty delight. Their macarons are pleasing to the eye and to the tastebuds, but have gone up in price quite a bit and not worth their current price. An event for an easter egg hunt advertised 50 eggs hidden, supposedly at both locations, though that was not the case. Overall, an ok stop but not something I am planning on returning to, especially with the bit of attitude from the workers.

Alma Chocolates

140 NE 28th Ave
Portland, Oregon

Is it a sin to eat a Virgin Mary made of dark organic chocolate, and covered with hand-brushed edible gold?
If so, see you in hell.

Sweet Masterpiece

922 NW Davis St
Portland, Oregon

If you like raw chocolate, and/or if you have diabetes and are looking for a sugar-less version of your favorite truffle, this is your shop.
They also do a great job combining spices and chocolate (especially ginger, cinnamon, and hot pepper). Note that their hot cocoa and many mochas are a nice touch in winter!
